One of the major Chinese festivals is coming up...the Mid-Autumn Festival or the Moon Festival! So here's some vocabulary about this event in both mandarin and cantonese. Did I mention how much I love this event? ...food, family, lanterns, food, moon-viewing, food...♥♥♥ this year its on Sunday, September 14

~~I included cantonese pronunciation because thats my mother dialect and some people are interested in learning it. Those of you who are interested in this, please know that cantonese has 8 tones and I'll post another entry on their differences later.

seems like lots of people want to learn/practice some chinese...so here's a lesson that I typed up. It will first be a story (simplified and traditional), its mandarin pin yin pronunciation, a translation, vocab, then explanations of key mechanics. (this way others can learn and I can practice typing in chinese faster! yay! win-win situation. =D)
oh and I tried to type the pinyin with tonal marks as they should be so if it looks funny on your computer then please let me know and I'll do something about it.

edit: i've added the pronunciation and will do so from now on!

Why am I walking? (為什麼我跑?)

Today, there is more hope than ever for people facing breast cancer. However, there is much work to be done to find promising new treatments, increase awareness about the importance of mammograms, help all women get access to screenings and care, and connect those impacted by the disease with the information, day-to-day help, and emotional support they need to wage their battle against breast cancer.
I believe that hope for a world without breast cancer starts with me. That’s why I'm walking in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Not only is this my opportunity to join my community to fight back against breast cancer, it is a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease and to save more lives.
You can be a part of it, too!
I have signed up to walk and hope you will join me in my effort by signing up to join my team or making a donation in support of my participation. Hope starts with us.

My Personal Story

Even though my immediate family and I have, thankfully, never been directly touched by breast cancer, we have watched helplessly as some of our relatives contracted various other cancers and all of them have left this world.
I'm sure that the worry we felt for our loved ones were only a small margin of what they and their immediate family felt. At that time, we believed that we were completely powerless to aid them in anyway.
Now, I know that I can make a difference, not only to my deceased loved ones but also to all those people who are already or will be fighting cancer. When I made my decision to walk and lead a team, I saw it as taking an active role in preventing or weakening the devastation cancer can have on lives. I encourage you to join me!

I heard this one from ChinesePodcast so this one involves some mandarin! I got the first two but I didn't get the last two in the series.

so this works like a series, which makes getting the next in the series easier when the first is answered. (like the riddle with the elephant and the refrigerator)

 `  `
There is a grass field, and there came a flock of sheep. Guess a type of fruit.

the hint is a homophone in mandarin... )
Next:

 `  `  `
There is a grassy field again and again there came a flock of sheep. Also, there came a group of wolves. Guess a type of fruit.

hint, this is another homophone.... )
Next:

 `  `  `  `
Again, there is a grassy field and there came a flock of sheep and a group of wolves but the wolves didn't eat the sheep. Guess a type of sea creature.

hint...another homophone that gives the reason for this.. )
Lastly:

 `  `  `  `  `

Again there is a grassy field and there came a flock of sheep and a group of wolves. The sheep then shrieked but the wolves still didn't eat the sheep. Guess a type of sea creature.

hint...it sounds really like the previous answer... )
Anyway I thought that I'd post this riddle because it is an example of how some chinese riddles work, which means that they are all a play on words. But really some are so funny and outrageous! I ♥ them!

I found some chinese riddles that I actually get! Yay!

Here's two... (boxes means that the word doesn't how up on your computer, with out a file, sorry, )

,
  身穿粉紅襖, 船不用.
(猜一種花卉)

A small maiden, sits in the middle of the water
Wearing a pink jacket, she rows her boat without oars
(Clue: a flowering plant)

一個 = a (person) = small  姑娘 = maiden,  坐在 = sits upon = water 中央 = middle
= (her) body 穿 = wearing 粉紅 = pink = jacket,
= to row or punt = (her) boat = not = use . = paddle or oars
= guess (or in this context, a clue) 一種 = a type 花卉 = flower

want the answer? find out here and get the link of where I found this... )

紅姑娘,住小巷
冬天短,夏天長
(猜一種用品)

A red maiden, lives in a small lane
In the winter she is short, in the summer she is long
(Clue: an everyday item)
紅姑娘 = (a) red maiden 住 = to live / dwell 小巷 = small lane
冬天 = winter 短 = short (length) 夏天 = summer 長 = long
猜一種用品 = guess a thing, a household item

get the answer! )

I have another one but I'm really tired right now, so I'll go to bed.
